[Monday
July 21st, at 8:07pm]
Project Runway is back on and i am SOOOOO happy, yet at the same time i am upset because i am not on the show myself lol!!! If u havent seen the show yet i dunno what box you're living in but get out of it and start watching lol. Lovers of the show be sure to drop your opinions in a comment! I didn't have time to read up on the designers beforehand to get "first impressions" so I just watched the show first, then went on later to read more info on each of them. Portions of their bios were taken from Bravotv.com

The episode started off with Tim Gunn almost murdering someone with a wine bottle cork. It flew off the top of the roof im sure several flights down to where it could have dropped on someone and gave them a concusion. His face was priceless. I was shocked that they repeated a challenge and chose "Create a look from items purchased at a Grocery Store." The grocery store being gristedes. Their budget was $75 dollars with a time of 30minutes to shop. I came up with the idea to go to gristedes with my best friend and pick out $75 worth of items in 30minutes and then come home and sketch a design that i would have made if i was on the show. Anyone else who is interested in fashion design should do the same before the next show airs to challenge themselves. I plan on going tommrow and i will post my sketches before the next show airs. I wont be able to actually create the garment because i am limited in funds at this moment lol but something is better then nothing.
On to the garments! In MY order of top-bottom design choices of last weeks challenge!

Kelli Martin, 27 Boutique Owner Columbus, Ohio
Education: The Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandise
Favorite designers: Thierry Mugler, Yohji Yamamoto, and Betsey Johnson
Fashion must: A party dress
If Viviene Westwood & Betsey Johnson had a baby Kelli claims it would be her. She fought her way through adversity receiving a full scholarship from Bob Mackie at the Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandise in Los Angeles. Once there, she was accepted into the Advanced Design Program where she was able to design and show a small collection in 2006. Kelly went on to design a guitar for Kevan Hall during Los Angeles Fashion Week and just recently started her own empire, Black Market -- a cutting edge boutique in her hometown.

Designed by Kelli
Materials: Vacuum Bags, Bleach, Dye, Coffee filters, Thumbtacks & Notebook

I can believe that she could very well be the perfect mixture of betsey and viviene. She definetly lived up to her bio with the first garment she designed. I felt this gardening dress was the best out of all of them and that she def deserved to win. It was very creative. I was especially impressed wit her usage of the spiral portion of a notebook for hook and eyes on the back of the dress which unfortunatly can't be seen here. What an innovative idea. I also loved the studded empire waist and idea of burned coffee filters. I also thought the print on the skirt was gorgeous it reminded me of a print used in Jeremy Scott's "Right to bear arms" collection pictured here:

I am definetly interested in seeing what else kelli has in store.

Daniel Feld, 25 Freelance Designer The Berkshires, Massachusetts
Education: Fashion Institute of Technology
Favorite designers: Charles James and Thierry Mugler
Fashion must: A novelty blazer
Daniel claims his looks are always Glamourous, Sexy and Showstoppers. Daniel attended the Pratt Institute of Art and Design. He takes an interesting approach to fashion by infusing his love of science and nature and his love for fashion. The self-proclaimed adventurous designer thought he wanted to be a zoologist, but a love of art and design eventually took over and he now draws inspiration from nature to create innovative structures and creative textures in his work. Aside from that, the greatest fashion influences in Daniel's life have been the great couturiers of Paris. Daniel created a luxury-based line in the past although he had to discontinue his business due to lack of capitol needed to run the company. In addition, Daniel has worked for Donna Karan and designed couture dresses for Melinda Eng and has also tapped the exciting theatrical world of design working as a costume designer for Sotu Productions and The Box.

Design by Daniel
Materiels: 260 Plastic Cups & Muslin

I was impressed from the beggining by Daniels portfolio. Especially the dress made out of playing cards. I was also then impressed by what he did with the cups forming them into a sweetheart cocktail dress. It was inspiring and obviously he is capable of thinking outside the box which is a big plus. I'm sure that dress took alot of hard work and patience and that can always be admired. I agreed with the 2nd spot in the top that he earned =] I am most definetly looking forward to his future work. I hope he doesnt become cocky.

Jerell Scott, 28 Freelance Designer Houston, Texas
Favorite Designers: Alexander Mcqueen, Vivienne Westwood and Karl Lagerfeld
Fashion Must: Great Shoes
This former model moved to NY when he was 18. He couldn't afford "The Cool Clothes" so he made the cool clothes. He designs 1 of a kind pieces for a selective group of people, celebrites.

Design by Jerell
Materials: Tablecloth, Lawn Chairs, Cocktail Umbrellas & Koosh Ball

At first i thought i heard jeremy scott and i was like WHAT?!?! There cant be another Jeremy Scott being that he's already one of my favorite designers lol. It looks like he will have some good ideas. I love the koosh ball sleeve, headpiece (which i agree with Daniel V. from season 2 of project runway) that it reminds me of Sarah Jessica Parker at the Sex & the City London premiere.

I do like the skirt and the uneven hem. Even though i wasent thrilled with several of the designers choice to use fabric substitues i liked how it looked here. It gave it a vintage reconstruncted look. I love how the outfuit was styled the bracelets and the bronze shoes go perfectly. This is what helps me believe in his eye. The rest of the design i am unsure about though. I dont mind horizontal and vertical stripes being paired together but in this case i dont think I like it. I think the umbrellas look akward like he just wanted to use them. It it makes the dress look jumbled and like there was no clear idea, just a whole bunch that he put together but hopefully he will be able to contain himself on the next project and stick to one or two ideas, not 5! Ultimatley this outfit reminds me of something that should be worn to a parade. The only reason i placed it as my number #3 was because of all the potential i see in it and there werent many other options for my favorites lol. On another note i liked the hoodie he was wearing on the show. I like his personal style from what i have seen.

Kenley Collins, 25 Freelance Designer Pompano Beach, Florida
Education: Florida State University
Favorite designers: Coco Chanel, Betsey Johnson, and Edith Head
Fashion must: Black, high-waisted skinny jeans
Kenley says her aesthtic is LOUD because she mixes prints, plaids... She is the daughter of a tugboat captain and the youngest of 3 girls. She began her career in fashion at the age of 16, when she started buying vintage clothing and reconstructing them for herself and friends. After graduating from Florida State University with a marketing degree, Kenley found herself in New York City and got a sales job at Missy Wear. It didn't take longer than a week for her to be promoted to a design position where she was able to blossom in the industry. Since then, she has been working on her own line in a small boutique, her Web site and has begun freelancing and teaching in her spare time.

Design by Kenley
Materials: Dodge Ball, Lawn Chair & Tablecloth

I like kenley because i also consider my style to be loud at times and i love to mix various prints, materials, etc. I also thought her portfolio was nice. I REALLY did like the fact that she used the rubber ball for the bust portion but from the empire waist down i was not that impressed. This looks like gift wrapping paper just pasted together for an arts and crafts project. I do like the diffrent porportions of the skirt here and how the vertical and horiztonal stripes look on this piece. I give major props for using the dodge ball. I can see there is definetly talent there and i am looking forward to future designs from Kenley.

Wesley Nault, 23 Freelance Designer Blackstone, Massachusetts
Education: Fashion Institute of Technology
Favorite designers: Jeanne Lanvin, Marc Jacobs, and Cristobal Balenciaga
Fashion must: Big old sunglasses
Wesley began making his own clothes in middle school and was paid by other students to do the same for them. He then went on to study at the Fashion Institute of Technology for four years. During his time there, he interned at Marc by Marc Jacobs, Marc Jacobs, and Levi Group Inc., where he was able to learn the ins and outs of the industry. He considers himself to be poised, polished and professional and his design style to be clean, classic, and sophisticated.

Design by Wesley
Materials: Tablecloth, Fly Swatter & Plastic Cups

Even though he used a tablecloth and it really made him lose MAJOR points I Lovedddd the bold color. I Loved the use of the fly swatters and paper cups. What a great idea for an object to incorpate into your design on the fly swatters and I like that it was subtlety used. I like the gloves also. Overall very cute simply chic looking design. I'm Looking forward to what else he can come up with.

Korto Momolu Briggs?, 33 Freelance Designer originally from Liberia, West Africa currently lives in Little rock, Arkansas
Education: Fashion School in Ottawa, Canada
Favorite designers: Tracy Reese, Valentino, and Randolph Duke
Fashion must: Great bag
She's been published in every magazine in Arkansas and now wants to achieve that same sucess in NY. She hopes to be the 2nd woman to win project runway and the 1st African American. Originally from Liberia, Korto moved to Canada to attend fashion school. After school, she moved outside of Little Rock, Arkansas, where she now resides with her husband and daughter. Drawing from her African roots, Korto infuses tribal details into her classic designs. She is inspired by rich fabrics and textures and says her designs are intended for real, full-figured women. In her spare time, Korto works as a freelance fashion photographer, dances in an African dance troupe and does African hair braiding and makeup.

Design by Korto
Materials: Tablecloth, Kale, Bell Peppers & Cherry Tomatoes

The first thing i thought when i read she does african hair braiding was "HAIR BRAIDING MISSSSS" from them rude broads on 125th who ask me if i want HAIR BRAIDING after just getting a fresh wash & set *_* NYC uptowners know what im talkin about lol. In the photo this looks beautiful but upon first glance i didnt get why the judges were so impressed and she was placed in the top 3. On the dress form it looked like a big yellow tent but on the model it didnt look like that and i loved the big bow detaling in the back which also cant be seen here =[. I mean the color was beautiful. The model looked gorgeous. I dunno i'm just not into kimonos. Its not something i would wear but i am glad that nina and micheal liked it atleast. Michael liked it so much and was inspired that he has designed something in a similar silohuette for his resort 2008 collection....

Heidi obviously did not like korto's look much though. Just check out her facial expressions.

Terri Stevens, 39 Freelance Designer Chicago, Illinois
Favorite designers: Jean-Paul Gaultier, Karl Lagerfeld, and Cristobal Balenciaga
Fashion must: Low-waist, bell-cut black pants
Terri is a freelance stylist and designer from Chicago who describes her style as what it would be like if Aerosmith met Lauryn Hill met Micheal Jackson Lol...whatever that means. She feels that what will set her apart from the other designers is that shes really fast! She claims to be able to make a 3 piece suit in an 8 hour period. She has worked as an assistant designer to Barbara Bates, a stylist and merchandiser for Nordstrom, and a regional visual manager for Levi's. While attending Columbia College, she started her own fashion organization where any student could display and debut their designs in competitions, exhibitions, and an annual fashion show. She is currently working as a Victoria's Secret visual manager and would like to break out with her own designs. She has eclectic and funky styles that compliment her own unique personality. Karl Lagerfeld is Terri's biggest fashion inspiration.

Design by Terri
Materials: Mopheads & Tablecloth

I loved the braiding of the mop heads i would have made a long dress though and dyed it like in an ombre effect. I think that would have been impressive. She killed the outfuit (in a bad way) with that cheap tablecloth wrapped around as a skirt. It felt like she just gave up at the last minute and just put something on to finish the outfit. This is where she lost MAJJJJJJJJOR pointsfor me. I can see where she was going but the skirt material just looks so cheap and basic. Maybe if she would have used something else to make the skirt? I just think she should have done a full dress with the mopheads anyway! Looks almost like spaghetti from a far lol but still an impressive top.

Leanne Marshall, 27 Freelane Designer Portland, Oregan
Education: The Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandise
Favorite designers: Rodarte, Maison Martin Margiela, and Zac Posen
Fashion must: Plain white or gray t-shirt
Leanne who considers herself to be "the silent fashion assassian" got her itch for design at the early age of 12, after designing ballet costumes. A graduate from the FIDM in San Francisco, Leanne was the recipient of the Levis/Dockers Fashion Designer of Tomorrow scholarship. Much of her designs are influenced by her five-plus years as a graphic designer and can be described as innovative, structural and sophisticated, resulting in a style that's unquestionably her own. Her feverish appetite for fashion and creation probably lent a hand in naming her line "Leanimal," which she just started a few years ago is currently being sold in Portland, New York, and Seattle.

Design by Leanne
Materials: Tablecloth, Meringue Cookies, Cofee Filters & Marshmellows

Leanne said it made her nervous that so many other people chose tablecloth because she wanted to be DIFFRENT... Yettt she chose tablecloth?!?!? Hmmm... The color is cute. I like what she did with the candy. I like the silhouette, i just dont get the white fungus popping off the dress. It looks like stuffing is coming out, like if u cut a teddy bear open..WTF?!?!?! BUTTT i see potential. The back was also especially nice. They need to post back views!! Looking forward to future designs.

Emily Brandle, 27 Freelance Designer Sacramento, California
Education: Otis College of Art & Design
Favorite designers: John Galliano, Vivienne Westwood, and Rei Kawabuko
Fashion must: Great Jeans
Emily grew up in Sacramento, California and attended the Otis College of Art and Design in Los Angeles, where she learned the business aspect of fashion. She mastered the skills of trade shows, wholesale buying and press, all which helped reach her goal of designing her own collection. Emily has worked with XoXo, La Blanca, DKNY, Rozae Nichols, and Jeremy Scott. As a sales and press manager for Hysteric Glamour, Emily traveled back and forth from Japan 10 times in two years. In 2006, she launched a design team called "Smoke and Mirrors," which has become a successful LA brand. The biggest fashion influences in Emily's life have been her friends, her family, and her traveling experiences.

Design by Emily
Materials Tablecloth, Ballons, Napkins & Bouncy Ball

First and foremost i was happy to see that she has worked with one of my favorite designers jeremy scott who i mentioned earlier in this post. I think i did that oragami as a project in pre-school though... I DO love dramatic necklines but i dunno.. i don't like the tablecloth ILL fitting dress. Look at the waist its all bunched up!! The belt doesnt help the look either, although I THINK I like the boots with the dress.. Overall on this look though I JUST DONT KNOW!! I'll just have to see her future designs.

Keith Bryce, 26 Boutique Owner Salt Lake City, Utah
Education: Salt Lake City Community College
Favorite designers: Marc Jacobs, Moschino, and Valentino
Fashion must: Great-fitting jeans
When asked by Heidi Keith described his style as kinda Urban, a little bit of rock. He said if Heidi would wear it then its acceptable which i thought was kind of kiss ass and corny. "Get noticed or go home" is Keith's signature saying and he lives and designs by that mantra. He admits to being a self-taught designer with a background in marketing and advertising. While always having a hidden passion for women's clothing, Keith didn't pursue his dream until asked if he was interested in working on a fashion show while producing artwork for clothing. He bought his own sewing machine two weeks before that show and has been designing ever since. He hopes to be original and marketable when it comes to the runway.

Design by Kieth
Materials: Tablecloth, Laundry Bags & CarShade

Well according to keiths signature he should be going home. I thought the silhouette was cute but the fabric choice was REALLY safe =/ Not enough to make him stand out. I hope he doesnt continue to play it safe or else he wont last long but on the other hand he did get noticed by me when he was laying in that bed. I saw some nipple piercings :-x I thought he looked fake sexy. So on that note he can stay around LOL :-x shhhhh He just needs to keep the glasses off and cut of that rat tail i think he has in the back of his head *_*

Jennifer Diederich, 27 Freelance Designer Currently living in a small town near Florence, Italy but from East Syracuse, NY
Education: Fashion Institute of Technology
Favorite designers: Schiaparelli, Moschino and Cynthia Rowley
Fashion Must: A go-to party dress
desperately wanted to be a fashion designer. After graduating from the Fashion Institute of Technology, she moved to Italy to pursue her dream. In Italy, she has worked as an embroidery designer for top European design house Blumarine. Color, art and Audrey Hepburn are among her greatest inspirations and she says her design theory is Holly Golightly (for those who dont know who that is its audrey hepburns character in breakfast at tiffany's) attends a Salvador Dali exhibit.

Design by Jennifer
Materials: Papertowels & Lipstick

This was dumb down to the green shoes she paired it with. The Lipstick marks didnt help the boring white dress for me. Looks like somebody just got drunk and started kissing on her dress. 3 randomly placed kiss marks?!? Wtf.. Better luck next time. Its not horrrrrrrible. Its a cute silhouette but so what how many times have i seen it. I feel like nina cause i am BORED!

#12

Blayne Walsh, 23 Freelance Designer Yakima, Washignton (Seattle)
Education: Art Institute of Seattle
Favorite designers: John Galliano, Yohji Yamaoto, and Diesel
Fashion must: Neon anything!
Blayne has been designing since he was 17. He currently works at a cofee shops but feels eventually that fashion will be bringing home the bacon! He is obssesed with tanning and im pretty sure by the end of the show he will look like the oompa loompa below.

Design by Blayne
Materials: Drawer Liners, Shoelaces, Jumprope & Pot Holders

This looks like a tumor. A hot tragic mess, definetly not "Girlicious" whatever the hell that means lol. This dude seems creative though. I like the same designers he likes and i agree on NEON because i love Neon, i think its underated. Im not talking about wearing neon in the 80s way not there is anything wrong with that but bringing it into the new age. A fun new Chic and edgy way to wear it! Either way that first tragedy he sent down the runway didnt do him any justice. I was just glad to see that the judges could look past its horror and see that he has a point of view atleast and hopefully next week he will prove that he is capable of creating something artistically and visually pleasing. Also i hope he stops with the "girlicious", "holla at cha boy" nonsense (even though it was cute when tim said it in the prievew package) thats so 2005. Come on! I agree that it seems he is trying to coin a catch phrase such as christian's "fierce" or "hot tranny mess". Although some people found that annoying as well i honestly believe those phrases came natrual for christian where as with blayne i feel his "catch-phrases" are forced. I think he is just trying to become a character that he may not be just for tv. Either way hopefully he will just simmer down with the talk and just produce great art and i will like him =] Writing girlicious on his model for each runway show will make me just want to vomit.

Jerry Tam, 32 Owner/Design Director of FORM - Orignaly from Butte, Montana
Education: Attended both Parsons and Fashion Institute of Technology
Favorite designers: Martin Margiela, Rick Owens, and Calvin Klein
Fashion must: Black and white combos
Jerrys been working in the industry for seven years. With only two years of design education, including time at both Parsons School of Design and the Fashion Institute of Technology, he has worked with Imitation of Christ, Perry Ellis Women's Wear, and Zac Posen. All of his work has lead him to the creation of his own label, FORM, which he launched three years ago in New York City. Inspired by intrinsic architecture, FORM uses natural fabrics for both warmth and aesthetics.

Design by Jerry
Materials: Shower Curtain, Tablecloth, Gauze, Napkins & Rubber Gloves

From the beggining i liked his theme" April showers brings May Flowers" but when he said shower curtains to make a raincoat i was already concerned by the lack of innovation fabric wise. The styling really MURDERED him in this case, literally lol. It looked better before the runway but in the end it was tragic. What possesed him to use the "GROOVY" white boots and store bought yellow gloves?!?! Poor thing... i felt bad for jerry but somebody had to go and i did agree with the descion in the end even though he wasent my worse design pick. I feel this is perfect proof that there should be two challenges though before elimanition so it could really feel like the right person went home! Like with other shows such as top chef that have the quickfire challenge before the main challenge and shear genius with the quick cut challenge before the main challenge.

Joe Faris, 41 Senior Designer Schott Brothers, Troy, Michigan (Detroit)
Education: Parsons School of Design
Favorite Designers: Giorgio Armani, Yves Lauren, and Betsey Johnson
Fashion must: Basic black t-shirt
Joe has been working in the fashion industry for the past 18 years. He considers himself a sportswear designer and currently owns two boutique jean and leather lines, which take him between New York and Detroit. Coming from a rich fashion background, he has also worked at Ralph Lauren and Pelle Pelle. Joe's wife and their two daughters, Keely and Maia 5 & 9 years old are his inspirations.

Design by Joe
Materials: Oven Mitts, Fusilli Pasta, Muslin & Tomato Can Labels.

More arts and crafts project. This time how to make a homemade apron from things found in your home. SMH. This pattern looks soooooo basic like a standard one u first buy and learn from a fabic store. Im really not impressed. I think its really ugly and i hate the shoes he choose which just accentuted the ugly. In the wise words of christian, "I'm gonna die of barfness."

#15

Stella B. Zotis, 42 Freelance Designer Astoria, Queens (NYC)
Favorite Designers: Vivienne Westood, Balenciaga, and Alexander McQueen
Fashion must: VestIn the past five years, this self-taught New Yorker has transitioned from a punk-rock makeup artist to a sought-after leather and denim guru by some of Rock n' Roll's elite. Her best fashion advice is not to blend in and not to let your clothes wear you.

Her personal style i liked off the bat it reminded me of Kat Von D's

Designed by Stella
Materials: Garbage bags

In the words of Erkah Badu, "Bag lady, you gon' miss your bus." Lol.. smh this was tragic. I don't even know what to say. I was saddened by this design because from her pesonal style i was expecting too see something really edgy and rock and roll but instead i got garbage, LITERALLY. I guess she made it work to the best of her ability given that she didnt have any back up fabric. She was deservingly in the bottom but in the end i think they made the right descison by giving her one last chance and i hope she makes up for it next episode. Although ultimatley i thought jerrys design was a little better the way he styled it made it appear worse then stellas and put his taste level into question. Either way im interested in seeing what stella has up her sleeve just based off her personality and personal style but if she messes up again then i wont be upset if shes in the bottom again. Sorry stella but u gotta get your groove back, a.s.a.p! Lol :-x

Suede, 37 Freelance Designer Originally from Seven Hills, Ohio
Education: Kent State University
Favorite Designers:Jean-Paul Gaultier, Christian Lacroix, and Christian Dior
Fashion Must A great hoodie
Suede started his fashion career as an intern at Geoffrey Beene and decided to pursue a career in sportswear. He has launched denim-based collections and worked with brands such as polo jeans, todd oldham, and jordache. Has also has a passion for couture, eveningwear and specialty apparel. Suede believes that this wide variety of style makes him a multi-talented designer. He describes himself as edgy, captivating, and alternative. Madonna has been his biggest fashion influence -- he finds that her ability to explore so many styles and cultures is a great inspiration. He thinks that layering, experimenting, and leaving things to the imagination are all fashion musts.

Design by Suede
Materials: Tablecloth & Doggie Waste Bags

I agree with layering and experimenting are fashion musts but i dont agree with suede speaking of suede in the 3rd person *_*. This is just a broke down mess not to mention the models hair. Whats up with the hair!??! Looks like she was rolling around in bed for 48hours then just got up and said oh i have to walk the runway today! Cheap cheap cheap picnic table cloth with pinata decorations. Come on suede with the semi-cool hair i expected something better then this! STEP-UP! As u said this was just as whack-a-doodle as the word whack-a-doodle itself *_* I saw some neon koosh balls why didn't you use them!!!!

Auf Wiedersehen until my next entry =]
